Palestina, the territory of the Philistines, appears in the Book of Mormon only within Nephi’s quotation of Isaiah. The passage is a burden dated to the year King Ahaz died, warning Palestina not to rejoice at the breaking of the rod that had smitten it: “Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken; for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent” (2 Nephi 24:29). The prophecy continues that its root will be killed with famine and its remnant slain, and that the whole of Palestina is dissolved, with smoke coming from the north (2 Nephi 24:30–31).
