Epistles are written messages sent between named persons. Moroni wrote an epistle to Ammoron and sent it “by the servant of Ammoron,” who had previously brought an epistle to Moroni (Alma 54:4). Moroni closed his message by identifying himself: “I am Moroni; I am a leader of the people of the Nephites” (Alma 54:14).
Helaman sent Moroni an epistle “stating the affairs of the people in that quarter of the land” (Alma 56:1). Moroni directed an epistle to Pahoran in Zarahemla, addressing him as “the chief judge and the governor over the land” (Alma 60:1). Mormon wrote an epistle to the king of the Lamanites requesting leave to gather his people to Cumorah for battle (Mormon 6:2).
