Ammon¹, a descendant of Zarahemla described as a strong and mighty man, led an expedition from the land of Zarahemla to the land of Lehi-Nephi around 121 B.C. King Mosiah granted that sixteen strong men go up to inquire after the Nephites who had left Zarahemla under Zeniff and from whom nothing had been heard (Mosiah 7:1-3). Ammon took three of his brethren, Amaleki, Helem, and Hem, down into the land of Nephi, where the king’s guard seized them as suspected priests of Noah and held them in prison. Brought before King Limhi, Ammon explained that he was a descendant of Zarahemla come to find Zeniff’s people; Limhi then freed them and rejoiced to learn his brethren in Zarahemla were alive (Mosiah 7:6-14).

Limhi had Ammon recount to his people all that had happened since Zeniff left Zarahemla (Mosiah 8:2). Shown twenty-four gold plates that Limhi’s search party had found among the bones and ruins of a destroyed people, Ammon said he could not translate them but knew of a man in Zarahemla who could, and he explained that one who looks in the interpreters by God’s command is called a seer, who can know things past and to come (Mosiah 8:13-18). When Limhi and many of his people desired baptism, Ammon declined to perform it, considering himself an unworthy servant (Mosiah 21:33).

Ammon led Limhi’s people out of bondage, departing by night with their flocks and goods and journeying back to the land of Zarahemla, where they joined Mosiah’s people and became his subjects (Mosiah 22:11-13). There Limhi and his people, taught by Alma, were baptized (Mosiah 25:16-18).
