Gid was a Nephite chief captain during the wars against the Lamanites around 63 B.C., serving under Helaman in the campaign for the cities of the south. After the Nephites took Lamanite prisoners, Gid was made chief captain over the band assigned to guard the captives down to the land of Zarahemla (Alma 57:29).

On the march, Gid’s company met Nephite spies who warned that the Lamanite armies were advancing on the city of Cumeni. Hearing the spies’ cries, the prisoners took courage and rose in rebellion. Gid’s men turned their swords on the captives; the prisoners ran upon the swords in a body, the greater number were slain, and the rest broke through and fled. No longer guarding prisoners, Gid’s company marched with speed to Cumeni and arrived in time to help preserve the city. In his report of these events, recorded in Helaman’s epistle, Gid credited the deliverance to God (Alma 57:30-35).

Later, in the operation to retake the city of Manti, Helaman had Gid hide with a small number of men in the wilderness on the right while Teomner concealed his men on the left. Helaman then drew the Lamanite army out of the city by retreating and leading them into the wilderness, passing between Gid’s and Teomner’s hidden forces. Once the Lamanites had passed, Gid and Teomner rose from hiding, cut off the Lamanite spies, ran to the city, fell upon the few remaining guards, destroyed them, and took possession of Manti (Alma 58:16-23).
