Gilgal was a Nephite commander notable for his leadership during the last stand of the Nephite armies at the hill Cumorah. As with other leaders at the time, such as Lamah and Limhah, Gilgal commanded a division consisting of ten thousand soldiers. In the cataclysmic final conflict that occurred in A.D. 385, Gilgal and his entire regiment met their demise. Their collective fall in battle was documented by Mormon, the Nephite historian and military leader who lamented the immense loss of life at Cumorah. Gilgal’s death, along with the other commanders and their troops, marked the decimation of the Nephite forces and signaled the end of the Nephites as a people. The account is a somber note in Nephite history, underscoring the tragic consequences of the long-standing enmity between the Nephites and Lamanites (Mormon 6:14).
