An unnamed servant of Helaman, the Nephite chief judge, killed Kishkumen and broke up a plot to assassinate Helaman near the end of the 1st century BC. Helaman, son of Helaman, had been appointed to the judgment-seat in the forty-second year of the reign of the judges, and Kishkumen—who had earlier murdered the previous chief judge, Pahoran—was lying in wait to kill him as well, backed by the band led by Gadianton (Helaman 2:1-5).

Having been out by night, the servant obtained a knowledge of the band’s plans through disguise (Helaman 2:6). He met Kishkumen and gave him a sign, and Kishkumen, taking him for a fellow conspirator, revealed his aim to murder Helaman and asked to be conducted to the judgment-seat; the servant, now knowing Kishkumen’s full intent, told him to go forth to the judgment-seat (Helaman 2:7-8).

As they went, the servant stabbed Kishkumen to the heart, so that he fell dead without a groan, then ran and told Helaman what he had seen, heard, and done (Helaman 2:9). Helaman sent men to take the band of robbers so they could be executed under the law (Helaman 2:10), but Gadianton, finding that Kishkumen did not return, fled with his band into the wilderness before they could be caught (Helaman 2:11).
