Helorum was one of three sons born to King Benjamin, a respected leader and prophet among the Nephites. Raised alongside his brothers Mosiah and Helaman, Helorum received a rigorous education in the language and teachings of their fathers, an aspect of their upbringing that King Benjamin prioritized heavily. The knowledge imparted to them included the prophecies spoken by their ancestors, a deep understanding of the Lord’s commandments, and strategies for studying the records engraved upon the brass plates.

King Benjamin’s intent in giving his sons such an education was not simply for them to become men of understanding but also to ensure they had the means to recognize the mysteries of God and retain a record of His commandments (Mosiah 1:2-3). These commandments and prophecies were essential to Nephite society, as they provided a foundational understanding for both governing the people and ensuring their adherence to the ways of the Lord.

Beyond these details, the scriptures do not offer further insight into Helorum’s personal endeavors or contributions to Nephite history. However, it is implied that the education and spiritual guidance he received from his father during his youth were meant to serve him throughout his lifetime, shaping him into a figure of righteousness as expected from the offspring of such a devout leader. The brief mention of his upbringing suggests an underlying significance in the Nephite culture of passing on religious knowledge and establishing a connection to past generations through understanding the language and prophecies of one’s ancestors.
