Jared¹ came forth from the great tower with his brother, their families, and some others at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people (Ether 1:33). When the languages were confounded, Jared asked his brother — “a large and mighty man, and a man highly favored of the Lord” — to cry to the Lord that their own language not be confounded, and it was not; Jared then asked him to plead the same for their friends, who were likewise spared (Ether 1:34-37).
Jared next told his brother to ask the Lord whether they would be driven from the land and, if so, where to go, hoping for “a land which is choice above all the earth.” The Lord commanded them to gather their flocks, seed of every kind, families, and friends, and to go at the head of them down into the valley which is northward, where the Lord met them and led them toward the promised land (Ether 1:38-43). They traveled to the great sea, pitched their tents at a place they named Moriancumer, and dwelt there four years (Ether 2:13).
They built barges, boarded them, and were driven before a furious wind across the sea for three hundred and forty-four days, the brother of Jared praising the Lord throughout, until they landed on the promised land and began to till the earth (Ether 6:4-13). Jared had four sons — Jacom, Gilgah, Mahah, and Orihah — and, with eight daughters, twelve children in all (Ether 6:14, 6:20). When the people asked that one of their sons be anointed king, the brother of Jared said the request would lead to captivity, but Jared told him to let them have a king (Ether 6:22-24). After the firstborn of the brother of Jared and others refused, Orihah was anointed king (Ether 6:25-27). Jared died, and his brother also (Ether 6:29).
