Jesse is a figure briefly mentioned in the Book of Mormon, prominently known as the father of David, who would become a celebrated king of Israel. His significance in the Nephite record is primarily due to his mention in the prophecies of Isaiah, which were reiterated by Nephi, a prophet and leader among the Nephites. Jesse’s lineage is highlighted, placing him in the messianic line that would lead to Jesus Christ. The prophecies describe a “rod” coming from the stem of Jesse and a “root of Jesse” to act as a standard to the people and a signal for the gathering of Israel (2 Nephi 21:1, 10). While Jesse’s personal history, deeds, and character are not expounded in the Book of Mormon narrative, his role as an ancestor to Christ and the symbol of a divine covenant is emphasized, reflecting the importance of lineage and fulfillment of prophecy within the Nephite scriptural tradition.
