Joseph, born in the wilderness during the exodus of his family from Jerusalem under the leadership of his father, Lehi, is recognized as a notable figure in the history of the Nephites. His birth came during a period marked by significant tribulation and sorrow for his parents, Lehi and Sariah (1 Nephi 18:19; 2 Nephi 3:1). Despite the challenges of his upbringing, which included the faithlessness of his elder brothers Laman and Lemuel, Joseph aligned himself with his righteous siblings—Nephi, Sam, and Jacob— embracing the teachings and commandments of the Lord.

Consecrated as a priest and teacher by his brother Nephi (2 Nephi 5:26; Jacob 1:18), Joseph is remembered as a just and holy man, steadfast in the service of his people (Alma 3:6). His diligence in following Nephi away from their rebellious brothers (2 Nephi 5:5-6) reflected his commitment to the principles of righteousness and his dedication to the welfare of his community.

Joseph was particularly honored in the blessing given to him by his father Lehi before Lehi’s passing. This blessing linked Joseph to the ancient patriarch Joseph of Egypt, confirming the continuation of divine covenants through Lehi’s posterity and promising that Joseph’s seed would not be utterly destroyed (2 Nephi 3:3). Lehi’s prophecy included the assertion that a future seer named Joseph, an heir of this covenant, would play a pivotal role in restoring knowledge of the covenants to the earth (2 Nephi 3:15). Joseph’s adherence to his father’s admonitions was a defining feature of his character and bore fruit in his unwavering dedication to upholding the sacred responsibilities entrusted to him.
