Lehi, son of Zoram, was a distinguished figure in the Nephite military, known for his valor and strategic acumen, particularly during the late pre-Christian era battles recorded in the Book of Mormon. Lehi was one of two sons of Zoram who, around 81 B.C., sought guidance from the high priest Alma the Younger before embarking on a rescue mission to recover their Nephite brethren who had been taken captive by the Lamanites. Acting upon Alma’s inspired counsel, Zoram, accompanied by his sons Lehi and Aha, led their forces to a victorious encounter wherein not a single Nephite life was lost, and their brethren were liberated (Alma 16:5-8).

Although the details of his life are succinctly presented, Lehi’s legacy is notably tied to his possible identification with another military leader of the same name, Lehi, who was an esteemed contemporary of Captain Moroni. If indeed the same individual, this Lehi was renowned for his leadership and fearlessness, characteristics that earned him significant command responsibilities. Lehi played a crucial role alongside Captain Moroni during pivotal battles, such as the defense of the river Sidon, where his strategic positioning was instrumental in the defeat of the Lamanite forces led by Zerahemnah. His reputation for military prowess was so formidable that the Lamanites feared him exceedingly, a testament to his capabilities as a defender of the Nephite cities, including his successful oversight of the city of Noah against Lamanite aggression (Alma 49).

Later in his career, Lehi demonstrated his steadfastness in battle near the city of Bountiful and also took command of the city of Mulek, another important location in the Nephite defense system (Alma 52 and 53). His close association with Moroni and their mutual respect are highlighted in the record, emphasizing not only their effectiveness in military leadership but also their shared values and devotion to their people. In the waning years of the military struggle, Lehi’s contributions were further evident as he assisted in restoring peace to the region, eventually supporting the transition of command to Moronihah, the son of Moroni.

Lehi’s dedication to the Nephite cause and his strategic ingenuity left an enduring mark on his society, securing a period of relative peace and stability during tumultuous times. His legacy is encapsulated in the brief but impactful mentions in the chronicle of Nephite military history where his deeds ensured the survival and prosperity of his people amidst persistent threats.
