Lehi, the youngest son of the chief judge Helaman, emerged as a pivotal figure in the spiritual landscape of the Nephites and Lamanites. His early years were guided by his father’s wisdom, setting him on the path of righteousness despite the tumultuous times he inhabited. Lehi partnered with his brother, Nephi, in an enduring missionary endeavor that profoundly affected both Nephite and Lamanite communities. It is said of Lehi that he was “not a whit behind [Nephi] as to things pertaining to righteousness,” and like Nephi, he was blessed with “many revelations daily” (Helaman 11:19, 23).

Starting their ministry around 30 B.C., Lehi and Nephi dedicated their lives to preaching the word of God following Nephi’s resignation from the judgment-seat (Helaman 5:4). Their evangelizing efforts, marked by powerful preaching and signs, led to the conversion of 8,000 Lamanites near Zarahemla (Helaman 5:19). Their mission would take a miraculous turn when they traveled to the land of Nephi. Captured and imprisoned, the brothers found themselves at the center of divine intervention. As an army approached to execute them, they were encircled by a protective pillar of fire which the Lamanites disdained to cross for fear of being consumed (Helaman 5:22-24). This extraordinary sign was accompanied by a thunderous voice urging the onlookers to repentance and marking Lehi and Nephi as God’s chosen servants.

The prison became a scene of revelatory splendor; Lehi’s and Nephi’s faces “did shine exceedingly, even as the faces of angels” as they conversed with heavenly beings, and were ministered to by angels (Helaman 5:36, 48). The ensuing conversion of their captors and others who witnessed these events (approximately 300 souls) was a testament to the profound faith of Lehi and his brother (Helaman 5:50). The seismic spiritual shift resulting from their imprisonment and deliverance catalyzed widespread repentance among the Lamanites (Ether 12:14) and would leave an indelible impression upon Nephite society.

Lehi’s joint ministry with Nephi extended into the land northward, evidencing their unyielding commitment to spread the gospel (Helaman 6:6). Throughout his life, Lehi exemplified steadfastness in faith and doctrine. His resilience, righteousness, and the miracles accompanying his service underscored the profound impact one man’s dedication can have when aligned with divine purpose.
