One of Captain Moroni’s soldiers, left unnamed in the record, stopped the Lamanite commander Zerahemnah from killing Moroni during the battle at the Sidon. After Moroni offered terms of peace, Zerahemnah kept his sword and rushed forward to strike him; the soldier struck the sword down to the earth so that it broke at the hilt, then struck Zerahemnah and took off his scalp, which fell to the ground (Alma 44:12).
The soldier picked up the scalp by the hair, laid it on the point of his sword, and held it out toward the Lamanites, declaring that as the scalp of their chief had fallen to the earth, so would they fall unless they gave up their weapons and departed under a covenant of peace. Many who heard the words and saw the scalp were struck with fear, threw down their weapons at Moroni’s feet, and entered into a covenant of peace, which allowed them to depart into the wilderness (Alma 44:14-15). When Zerahemnah stirred the rest of his men to keep fighting, their bare heads and naked skins were exposed to the Nephite swords and they fell quickly, as the soldier had foretold (Alma 44:18).
