Omer was a Jaredite king, son of Shule and father of Emer (Ether 1:29-30). He reigned after his father (Ether 8:1).

Omer’s son Jared rebelled against him, dwelt in the land of Heth, and through flattery gained half the kingdom; he then gave battle to his father, captured him, and made him serve in captivity (Ether 8:2). Omer spent half his days in captivity, and during that time fathered sons and daughters, among them Esrom and Coriantumr (Ether 8:4). Esrom and Coriantumr, angry at their brother, raised an army, defeated Jared’s forces by night, and spared Jared’s life when he gave up the kingdom to his father.

Having lost the kingdom, Jared grew sorrowful, and his daughter devised a plot to recover it. She had Jared send for Akish, son of Kimnor; she danced before Akish and he desired her to wife, whereupon Jared offered her in exchange for the head of Omer the king (Ether 8:7-12). Akish and his secret combination overthrew Omer’s kingdom, but the Lord warned Omer in a dream to depart, and he left the land with his family and pitched his tent at Ablom by the seashore (Ether 9:3).

A war between Akish and his own sons destroyed nearly all the people of the kingdom, leaving only thirty souls besides those who had fled with Omer’s house, and Omer was restored to the land of his inheritance (Ether 9:12-13). In his old age Omer fathered Emer and anointed him king; he saw two years of peace before he died, having lived many days that were full of sorrow (Ether 9:14-15).
