Pagag was the firstborn son of the brother of Jared. After the Jaredites reached the promised land, the people asked that one of the founders’ sons be anointed king over them (Ether 6:22). The brother of Jared objected, warning that a monarchy “leadeth into captivity,” but Jared told the people to choose a king from among the sons (Ether 6:23-24). They chose Pagag, who refused and would not be their king; when the people wanted his father to constrain him, the brother of Jared would not, and commanded that no man be forced to be king (Ether 6:25). Pagag’s brothers were chosen next and also refused, as did the sons of Jared, until Orihah accepted and was anointed king (Ether 6:26-27).
