Shearjashub was a son of the prophet Isaiah; his Hebrew name means “the remnant shall return.” When Syria under Rezin and Israel under Pekah went up against Jerusalem in the days of Ahaz, king of Judah, the Lord told Isaiah to take Shearjashub and meet Ahaz at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway of the fuller’s field, and to tell him not to fear the two attacking kings (2 Nephi 17:1-4).

Shearjashub’s name carried the message that though Judah would be brought low, a remnant of its people would return. He had a brother, Maher-shalal-hash-baz, whom Isaiah was likewise commanded to name as a sign (2 Nephi 18:1-3). Isaiah counted himself and the children the Lord had given him “for signs and for wonders in Israel” (2 Nephi 18:18).
