Uriah was a priest of ancient Israel whose name surfaces in the Book of Mormon narrative during the recounting of Isaiah’s prophecies. He is identified specifically as a credible and trustworthy individual, chosen to serve as a witness to Isaiah’s prophetic activities. His inclusion within the narrative signifies his prominence and respected status in the religious community of his time. Uriah’s role was to attest to the veracity of a prophecy concerning the impending swift and overwhelming defeat of Israel’s enemies. This event is symbolized by the name of Isaiah’s child, Maher-shalal-hash-baz, meaning “Destruction is imminent.” The acknowledgment of Uriah in the Book of Mormon text underscores the link between the Nephite record and the religious tradition from which they originated, demonstrating continuity with the religious practices and authorities of ancient Israel (2 Nephi 18:2).
