Burial of the Dead

Burial of the Dead is the burial of people who had died. Ishmael “died, and was buried in the place which was called Nahom” (1 Nephi 16:34). A speaker said, “with mine own hands, did help to bury their dead,” after 279 brethren were slain (Mosiah 9:19).

After a war, Nephites who were not slain buried those who had been slain and returned “to their lands, and to their houses, and their wives, and their children” (Alma 3:1). Others cast their dead into the waters of Sidon, where they “are buried in the depths of the sea” (Alma 44:22). Moroni compelled Lamanite prisoners to bury their dead and slain Nephites while guards watched them labor (Alma 53:1).

After caring for wounded men, a group buried its dead and “also the dead of the Lamanites, who were many” (Alma 57:28). People assembled “to mourn and to fast, at the burial of the great chief judge who had been slain” (Helaman 9:10-11).
