An angel appeared to Jacob, the brother of Nephi, and gave him prophecies of the Messiah that Jacob later recited to the Nephites. Jacob recorded that the angel had spoken to him “in the last night” and told him the Messiah’s name would be Christ, that he would come among the Jews, and that they would crucify him (2 Nephi 10:3).
From the angel Jacob also learned the fate of the house of Israel. The Lord God would manifest himself in the flesh, and after his coming the people would scourge and crucify him (2 Nephi 6:9). The angel further told Jacob that Israel would be driven to and fro, afflicted, scattered, smitten, and hated, but that the Lord would be merciful and gather them again to the lands of their inheritance once they came to a knowledge of their Redeemer (2 Nephi 6:11).
Nephi cites the same angel when stating that the Messiah would come six hundred years after Lehi left Jerusalem and that his name would be Jesus Christ, the Son of God (2 Nephi 25:19).
