Hamath was a city of the ancient Near East, named in the Book of Isaiah as quoted by Nephi. In Isaiah’s words, the Assyrian boasts of his conquests in a series of rhetorical questions: “Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?” (2 Nephi 20:9). The pairing of Hamath with Arpad places it among the cities the Assyrians subjugated.

Hamath is named again in the list of lands from which the Lord will recover the remnant of his people, alongside Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, and Shinar (2 Nephi 21:11). In the ancient world Hamath was a principal Hittite city and later a region of Syrian history.
