Moab is named once, in Nephi’s quotation of Isaiah’s prophecy of the gathering of Israel in the last days (2 Nephi 21:14, quoting Isaiah 11). The passage foretells that the Lord will recover the remnant of his people a second time, gather the outcasts of Israel and the dispersed of Judah, and end the rivalry between Ephraim and Judah (2 Nephi 21:11-13). Judah and Ephraim then turn on their neighbors: “they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them” (2 Nephi 21:14). The record gives no further detail on Moab; the original Moab was a region east of the Dead Sea whose people shared a common Semitic tongue and kinship with ancient Israel.
