Middoni is a location within the broader Lamanite territory characterized in the Book of Mormon as a site of considerable hardship for Nephite missionaries during their proselytizing efforts. It heralds most significantly as the place where Aaron, Muloki, and Ammah were imprisoned by the local Lamanite authorities (Alma 20:2-3; 21:11-13). The conditions the missionaries faced in the Middoni prison were notably severe, enduring extremities such as hunger, thirst, and physical maltreatment (Alma 20:29-30; 21:12-15). Despite this adversity, their story in Middoni unfolds to a more hopeful chapter through the intercession of Ammon and King Lamoni. Leveraging Lamoni’s kinship with the king of Middoni, Ammon successfully negotiates the release of the captive missionaries (Alma 20:4-7, 14-15, 27-28; 21:14). After their release, the efforts of Aaron and his companions eventually bore fruit in the conversion of many of the citizens, leading to the establishment of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies, a group distinguished for their covenant of peace and refusal to take up arms (Alma 23:8, 10). The narrative of Middoni thus encapsulates not only the trials encountered during missions among a sometimes hostile populace but also the triumph of faith and testimony in the face of adversity.
