Fortification

Fortification is the strengthening of armies, cities, and land by defensive works. Moroni strengthened Nephite armies by “erecting small forts, or places of resort” and by “throwing up banks of earth round about to enclose his armies”. He also built “walls of stone to encircle them about” around cities and the borders of the land (Alma 48:8).

Moroni placed a greater number of men in the Nephites’ weaker defensive positions and fortified the land they possessed (Alma 48:9). At the land of Noah, the Lamanites could enter the forts of security only by the entrance because of “the highness of the bank” and “the depth of the ditch” around them (Alma 49:18). Nephites prepared to cast stones and arrows at those attempting to climb into the fort by another way (Alma 49:19).

Moroni placed armies on the southern borders and caused them to erect fortifications to secure armies and people from their enemies (Alma 50:10). He caused Lamanite prisoners to begin labor “in strengthening the fortifications round about the city Gid” (Alma 55:25). After fortifying exposed parts of the land until they were sufficiently strong, Moroni returned to Zarahemla (Alma 62:42).
